Yes you can,the only prob i see is regular drywall mud will shrink and crack as it dries depending on how thick you put it on. If you do choose to use drywall compound,make sure you use a midweight or better as this wont shrink as bad.

You could also tell him that you are going to report them to the Better Business Burea, some times just mentioning the BBB willl make some companies to go against policy. Its worth a shot cause the worst they can say is go ahead and report us, Im not sure if they will listen to your report at the BBB but I have mentioned it to a few other people at different companies, and they gave me what I wanted, Ive never actually contacted the BBB.
