How to handle this situation with rowdy teens?

Exactly what you did, remain calm, walk away and not go back. Unfortunately there are plenty of teens, and adults like this in the world. These kids are raised like this, and probably some just follow suit to be 'popular'- I bet a few are shy, good kids underneath. But that's not our concern, so yes, I would have done exactly what you did.
