Why does everything often have a reddish hue after it snows?

I have noticed that often when it snows, everything is red and it is much brighter outside at night. This doesn't happen every time and on some nights it's there, on others its not. Because it's not there every night it can't be street lights etc. being reflected off the snow. So what gives those snowy evenings a red glow?
